Witch Hunts: The Gambia
So, a few weeks ago there was a witch hunt. Surprising right? Kind of shocking. I’m a bit aw struck (not in a good way). When I heard about it I couldn’t imagine it was true. The Gambia is so close. The Senegal/Mauritania boarder is only about 1 hour away (the Senegal River). The simple fact that 1000 people were kidnapped. For witchcraft, surprises me. We are not living in 1480. It’s 2009!
Yet, the events that took place in the Gambia are not the only ones that have happened recently. According to on line sources (because libraries are hard to come by here in Mauritania) in February of 2008 a woman in Saudi Arabia was convinced of witchcraft. In May of 2008 11 people in Kenya were accused of witchcraft.
So, I’m disturbed. Frustrated. Angry. Mad. And a little confused.
